About
Marisa Veerman creates work inspired by childhood innocence, fragility and emotion that draw the viewer inwards, making visible, the abstract human emotion. This vulnerability is juxtaposed against an abundant strength. Her gestural work communicates emotion to us with a raw honesty and quiet joy.
Marisa’s background in Visual Merchandising and textiles naturally leads to a process which channels her unique technique fusing photography and embroidery. Gently moving figures and space are a central theme of her work and transcend the subject into a peaceful stillness. The thread work adds a layer of intricate detail to the fleeting images with a sensitive human quality. A brushed wax varnish casts a painterly quality binding the layers of process which challenges the ideas about the differences between photography and painting creating a quiet, theatrical atmosphere.
Marisa’s work offers a reprieve from the world around us and encourages us to pause, breathe and take time to reflect. She has been involved in many exhibitions across Australia and recently the United States. Veerman recently won the 2019 Rotary Art Award for mixed media.
